New computers are equipped by power saving technology. When you don’t interact with computer definite time, that computer will switch to sleep mode. Consumption of electricity goes down to less to one third. The result of this is evident saving of electricity. This is saving of thousands gig watts in the world wide measure per day. Unfortunately this technology had removed power switches from computers and has replaced this by buttons. You can only switch-on the computer by button now. Switching-off the computer does the operating system. But, is that computer really switched-off?
In fact the computer is switched-off, because it can not do the calculations. However the circuits which provided switching-on are under electricity. That switched-off computer has consumption about 10 watts.
We can do the assumption. Ordinary computer is switched-off 15 hours per day. Such computers are about half million in Czech Republic. Let’s calculate 10 watts times 15 hours times 500,000 computers. We will get 75MWh per day only in Czech Republic. For you imagination this energy is necessary for train which crosses that country four times.
